Your water softener is one of those appliances you forget about until something goes wrong. It hums along in the basement or utility room, quietly doing its job. But when it stops, you’ll usually notice the effects before you notice the softener.
West Michigan is known for hard water. The minerals in it can wear down your plumbing and appliances, including your water heater. Here’s how to tell when your softener has quit, and when it is in need of repair or replacement.
1. Spotty Dishes and Cloudy Glassware
If your glasses come out of the dishwasher with a chalky film or water spots, hard water is probably back in your system. It’s often the first sign, and it’s easy to miss.
2. Scale Buildup on Faucets and Showerheads
White or crusty deposits around your fixtures are limescale, and they mean the minerals aren’t being filtered out. Left alone, scale can clog aerators and showerheads and cut down your water pressure.
3. Dry Skin, Dull Hair, and Stiff Laundry
Soft water should leave you and your clothes feeling fresh. If your towels feel scratchy, your skin feels tight after a shower, or your soap doesn’t lather like it used to, your softener may not be doing its job.
4. Your Water Bill or Energy Bill Is Creeping Up
Scale acts like insulation inside your appliances. When it coats the bottom of a tank, your water heater has to work harder to heat the same amount of water. That means higher energy bills and a shorter lifespan.
5. Strange Noises from Your Water Heater
Popping or rumbling from your water heater is often sediment and scale cooking at the bottom of the tank. A minor issue can be fixed with a professional water heater repair. But if your unit is 10 years old or more, it may be time to talk about water heater replacement before it fails on its own schedule, which is usually a cold January morning.
What To Do About It
Before you call anyone, try a few quick checks:
- Check the salt level. An empty brine tank is the most common culprit. Refill it and give the system time to catch up.
- Look for a salt bridge. A hard crust can form in the tank and keep salt from dissolving. Gently breaking it up can get things flowing again.
- Check the settings and power. Make sure the unit is plugged in and set to regenerate on schedule.
If none of that helps, it’s time to call a professional. Your softener could have a worn-out resin bed, a faulty valve, or simply be past its prime. An experienced plumber can tell you whether a repair makes sense or whether it’s better to replace the unit.
